About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación Etnográfica occupies the ground floor of the Centro Cultural Cortijo Moreno, a stately country house in Huércal de Almería. The estate belonged to a family of the urban bourgeoisie of Almería, enriched by mining businesses, grape cultivation and export activities through the port, and it was a benchmark for agriculture in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Today the restored building also houses the Casa de la Cultura and the municipal radio station Candil Radio, and its large araucaria is one of the symbols of the municipality.
The museography is by Rodolfo Caparrós and is organised into three areas: the historical circumstances that gave rise to Almería’s urban bourgeoisie and its links to agricultural and export businesses, the spread of irrigation during the 19th century, and the contemporary process by which the capital’s urban fabric developed across the territory.
During the visit, informative panels, original documents and old photographs can be seen, and an explanatory video is shown. The centre was reopened with a reorganisation of its rooms and an exhibition dedicated to esparto grass.
