About the museum
The Museo Paleontológico de La Ballena, also known as the Centro de Interpretación Paleontológica, opened in 2011 in Viator, near Almería. Its raison d'être is an exceptional discovery: the remains of a baleen whale from the early Pliocene, around five million years old, found in the former firing and manoeuvre ground of Viator. It is one of the best-preserved fossil cetacean skeletons in Spain.
The municipally owned museum occupies some 500 square metres across four rooms. The route follows a sequence that starts with the origin of the universe and the formation of the Earth, passes through the emergence of life and the evolution of species, and arrives at present-day biodiversity, with replicas of each geological period and a section devoted to the human genus.
The main room stages the whale site with the original remains found during the excavation and shows the predators that threatened the animal, including the megalodon, whose fossil teeth have also been found in Almería. The visit is guided by a local guide and can be complemented by a laboratory where fossils are handled and a teaching area for the youngest visitors.
