About the museum
The Colección Museográfica de la Legión en Almería opened on 20 September 1997, coinciding with the 77th anniversary of the creation of the Legion in 1920. It forms part of the cultural heritage of the Ministry of Defence, depends on the Army (Ejército de Tierra) and is attached to the Brigada “Rey Alfonso XIII” II de la Legión.
It is located within the Álvarez de Sotomayor base in Viator, in a building erected in 1924 to house troops in transit during the Spanish–Moroccan War (Guerra de Marruecos). The collection is spread over several rooms, including the foundation room, the uniform room and the room of the Legion's commanders, and is complemented by an inner courtyard.
Because it is inside a military installation, a visit requires prior booking and the presentation of a DNI (Spanish identity card) or passport.
