About the museum
The centre occupies the ground floor and courtyard of the Casa Grande, a municipal hostel in Coy, a district of Lorca. The building is an 18th-century mansion with a noble coat of arms, restored in 1997 while keeping its original features. The museum opened on 24 July 2007 and is run by Lorca Town Council.
One room covers the history of Coy and another is dedicated to archaeology, with replicas of important pieces such as the god Mercury and the Lion of Coy; the originals are kept in other museums. The ethnographic section focuses on a cellar with buried clay jars for storing wine, panels on vine growing and winemaking, and traditional farm tools that are no longer in use.
The centre also includes a textile room, with a loom that still works in skilled hands and interactive panels on jarapas (woven rugs) and esparto grass, and a reproduction of the privilege granted by Ferdinand IV in 1299, by which the council of Lorca received several castles, among them those of Alhama, Caristón and Coy.
