About the museum

The Museo de la Música Étnica de Barranda houses the collection of the Hispano-Uruguayan ethnomusicologist Carlos Blanco Fadol, made up of nearly 3,500 instruments from 145 countries on five continents. According to the museum's website, Blanco Fadol founded it in 2006 in Barranda, a district (pedanía) of Caravaca de la Cruz, with the Directorate General of Culture and the town council.

The instruments range from the 3rd century BC to the 20th century, and almost all of them can be played. The collection covers the four classic families: chordophones, aerophones, idiophones and membranophones.

Besides this classification, the museum offers thematic displays on the world's religions and on instruments linked to slavery, magic and witchcraft. One section pays tribute to Barranda and its Fiesta de las Cuadrillas.
