About the museum
The Las Amoladeras Visitor Centre is the main reception facility of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, at the entrance to the park on the road between Retamar and Pujaire. It belongs to the network of public-use facilities of the Junta de Andalucía and houses the park’s reception and shop, an information area on the Red de Espacios Naturales Protegidos de Andalucía (Network of Protected Natural Areas of Andalusia), and a multipurpose room for exhibitions and events, where an audiovisual about the park’s values is screened.
The exhibition shows the volcanic origin of the Cabo de Gata range, with a rich collection of minerals and an interactive map, and explains the semi-desert climate of the park, the flora adapted to it and the ecosystems of the coastal strip and the protected marine zone. It also covers human settlements since the Neolithic and the traditional uses and crafts inherited from Arab culture, such as esparto grass, jarapas (rugs) and pottery.
The centre includes the Rincón del Geoparque de Cabo de Gata, which provides information on other territories of the European Geoparks Network. A visit guide is available in Spanish, German and English.
