About the museum
The San Antonio Volcano Visitor Centre in Fuencaliente de La Palma has been operating since 2001 and is run by Fuencaliente town council. It explains the geological origins of La Palma as a volcanic island. Several rooms cover the importance of eruptions around the world, their risks and also their benefits, as in the case of the Teneguía eruption, of which unpublished images are shown, and of the malvasía grape grown on volcanic soil.
A large 3D screen allows visitors to fly over the municipality, and a solar telescope (TESS) installed outside broadcasts images of the Sun. The centre has an audiovisual room and a café with sea views. Since 2019 it has shared its facilities with the Centro de Interpretación del Cielo, a space for popularising astronomy and volcanology with interactive displays.
Two trails start outside. One leads to an astronomical viewpoint for observing the solstices and the stars. The other runs along the rim of the San Antonio volcano crater, is easy to access and allows the use of a “joëlette” chair. The walk along the rim takes about 30 minutes there and back and reaches a viewpoint over the southern and western slopes of the island.
