About the museum
The Chinijo Museum is in Caleta de Sebo, the only village on La Graciosa, just behind the church. Its name comes from “chinijo”, a word that in Lanzarote and La Graciosa means “small”, and it reflects the size of the premises: about 70 square metres presented as a multi-themed museum, “the smallest in the world”.
The route brings together several themed corners devoted to cetaceans, salt, the Chinijo Archipelago, aloe vera and orchilla. In the cetacean room the skeleton of a large whale is displayed, and the room talks about the large marine animals that frequent these waters, among them the megalodon, which lived in them millions of years ago. Another section recalls how the Phoenicians came to these coasts in search of purple dye.
The museum also explains the history and properties of aloe vera, a plant closely tied to the lives of the seafarers of La Graciosa, and the salt pans of the strait separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa, considered the oldest in the Canary Islands (1520). It has a small shop selling aloe vera products.
