About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación de los campamentos romanos de Petavonium is next to the town hall of Santibáñez de Vidriales, in the Casa Consistorial. It explains the military organisation of Roman camps, with particular attention to that of Petavonium, which covered about 17 hectares and housed some 5,000 legionaries of Legio X Gemina.
The centre includes recreated military installations showing the life of the units stationed in the fort. The visit is completed by a small thematic museum with materials from the site, including funerary stelae and Roman-period pottery, and by a walk through the camp itself.
Visits are always guided and must be booked. There is a short route on the Roman world and a long route which adds the Arrabalde, with the Casetón de los Moros dolmen and the Asturian hill fort (castro) of Las Labradas.
