About the museum

The Villar del Monte branch opened on 20 October 2009 as a branch of the Museo y Centro Didáctico del Encaje de Castilla y León, whose main seat is in Tordesillas. It was inaugurated with the exhibition “Paños de Ofrenda”, part of a show organised by the Instituto Leonés de Cultura.

The museum occupies three restored old houses, with about 301 m² of exhibition space. Its original aim was educational: to revive the lace, embroidery, textiles and costume of La Cabrera, as well as the culture of linen, wool and plant fibres, which had disappeared from the region.

The first room hosts courses and workshops, a thematic library on textiles and a selection of historic lace and embroidery pieces. The second brings together traditional pieces from La Cabrera and everything related to linen production, with the carro chillón (creaking cart), distaffs and chests. The third is devoted to weaving, with bedspreads, blankets and other pieces made on hand looms with linen and wool from La Cabrera.
