About the museum
The Museo Pirata de Cullera occupies a cave on the Isla de los Pensamientos, next to the Cullera lighthouse, on the edge of the cliffs and a few metres from the Mediterranean. It is dedicated to the raid by the Turkish pirate Dragut, lieutenant of Barbarossa, who sacked the town on 25 May 1550 and carried off considerable booty in goods and prisoners.
According to legend, the ransoms for the hostages were paid to Dragut in this cave. After the attack, Cullera was almost deserted, and only the building and restoration of its defences restored a sense of safety to the population.
The route begins with a diorama showing the royal town of Cullera in 1550 and continues with the context of the Mediterranean in the 16th century and the daily life of its inhabitants. Visitors can see antique nautical instruments, pieces of artillery, historical maps, clothing and coins, as well as a replica of a brigantine, a very fast corsair assault galley. It is advertised as the only piracy museum on the peninsula.
