About the museum

The museum occupies the hermitage of San Miguel, known as “el Fort”. It was built between 1752 and 1757 at the wish and at the expense of the Marquis of Nules, attributed to the architect Antonio Gilabert, to replace another hermitage from the mid-15th century. Only the central chapel of the original building survives, heptagonal on the outside and circular on the inside. In 1808 General Suchet used it as a fort for the Napoleonic troops, hence its name.

The Nules town council bought the building in 1988. On 15 April 1989 the sculptor Enrique Giner donated to his native town a series of sculptures, his work tools, drawings and sketches, his professional correspondence and the models of the more than one hundred medals he created during his life.

Between 1990 and 1994 the hermitage was restored to house the museum and the Archivo Histórico de Nules. The museum opened on 10 June 1995, based on the Giner bequest, and is devoted exclusively to the art of the medal. Its collection brings together medals from the mid-15th century to the present day.
