About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico de Burriana was officially recognised in 1967, thanks to the efforts of Norberto Mesado, who had started out as an amateur and assistant to the Salesian priest Tomás Utrilla, the driving force behind a new archaeological museum in the town. It had antecedents in the private collection of mayor Joaquín Peris Fuentes, almost all of which was lost, and in the public museum of the graded schools, founded in 1926. At first it occupied the upper floor of the old town hall.
Since 1991 it has been housed in the Centro Municipal de Cultura de La Mercé, the former Convent of La Merced. In 2005 the post of museum director and municipal archaeologist was advertised for the first time, opening a new phase with an archaeology service, a restoration workshop and an education area. The rooms bring together pieces from all over the province of Castellón and from other parts of Spain, from prehistory to the present day.
The permanent exhibition is arranged in rooms devoted to archaeology as a science and to funerary archaeology; to the history and archaeology of Burriana from its Muslim origins; to the Plana Baja and the province of Castellón; and to Roman Burriana, with remains from the Sant Gregori site and a bronze statue of Hermes-Mercury. In the garden of the centre, stone elements from the Roman period to the contemporary era are displayed.
