About the museum

The sanctuary was built next to the former Franciscan convent of Vila-real. In 1575 Pope Gregory XIII authorised the Franciscans to found a convent in the Kingdom of Valencia, and in 1578 the Alcantarine Franciscans settled in a hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Saint Pascual Baylón lived in this convent from 1589 until his death in 1592, and the place became a centre of pilgrimage.

In August 1936, during the Civil War, the sanctuary was set on fire, and the old church and the Baroque chapel were destroyed. The present Royal Chapel, with the saint’s tomb, was inaugurated on 17 May 1992, four hundred years after his death; in 1996 John Paul II granted the church the title of minor basilica. In 1998 the carillon and the swing bells of the two towers were inaugurated.

The museum occupies the Pouet del Sant room on the ground floor of the Royal Chapel and brings together religious art, ornaments and vestments from the 16th to the 20th century, many of them pieces saved from the fire of 1936. The well of 1589 that gives the room its name is preserved there. The visit includes the Royal Chapel, with the silver recumbent image of the saint and the cell where he died, and ends at the convent of the Poor Clares, where the cords of Saint Pascual made by the nuns are sold.
