About the museum

The Museu de la Taronja in Burriana was founded in 1995 on the initiative of Dr Vicente Abad García to research and promote the citrus industry, which had shaped the economy and society of the Valencian Community since the 18th century. It was housed in the Casa Conill, a Modernist building from 1910 on Calle Mayor.

The exhibition occupied six rooms devoted to the trade, transport, markets and advertising of the orange, and included an archive-library and a large collection of photographs and citrus trademarks. According to municipal information, it was a unique centre in Europe on its subject.

The museum closed its doors in 2012, at the height of the economic crisis, and the foundation that runs it remained inactive for years. In March 2026 Burriana town council and the Generalitat Valenciana signed an agreement before a notary to unblock the administrative and property situation: the board was renewed and the statutes amended so that the town council has majority control. In August 2026 the council set aside funds to inventory and pack the pieces and the archive, restore the costumes from the exhibition and prepare the equipment for a future venue. There is still no reopening date.
