About the museum

The museum occupies the former church of La Sangre, also known as the chapel of the Purísima Sangre. It was built in the 16th century as a single-nave Gothic church, and by 1597 it is recorded as a church and the seat of the Sang brotherhood. Later it served as a stable and barracks during the French occupation, as a school at the end of the 19th century and as a garage in 1932. It suffered damage during the Civil War, and today it is protected as a building of local importance.

After the restoration of 1985, the building housed the museum, which opened in 1988 and is run by the Nules town council. Through its archaeology, ethnography and fine arts collections, the museum brings the history of Nules and the territory of its former castle closer to visitors.

Among the archaeological pieces are a Roman altar from Santa Bárbara, and coins and ceramic fragments from Nules and Mascarell. The art collection includes a stone image of Santa María from the late 14th century, a polychrome San Jaime from the 15th century and a ceramic altarpiece of Santa Teresa from the 18th century. The ethnological collection brings together farming tools, household utensils and local clothing.
