About the museum

The church of San Juan Bautista in Aranda de Duero, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, is a building declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, and inside it the so-called Council of Aranda was held in 1473. In 2014 it was one of the venues of the exhibition “Eucharistia” of Las Edades del Hombre.

The building today houses the Museo Sacro de Aranda de Duero, a permanent exhibition of religious works of art from the diocese. For years the town council managed it under an agreement with the Archdiocese of Burgos, the owner of the building, and the inaugural exhibition was titled “Los caminos de la luz” (The Paths of Light). When that agreement ended, in January 2020, the parish of Santa María resumed opening the museum with its own funds, and in 2022 it offered a route with the same title, divided into nine chapters focused on light.

Among the pieces on display are the original panels from the door of the church of Santa María, processional crosses from Campillo de Aranda, Quintana del Pidio and Valdezate, reliefs and images from Gumiel de Izán and Vadocondes, four reliefs from the early high altarpiece of San Juan, and a relief of the Last Supper in polychrome wood from the 16th century.
