About the museum
The museum occupies the former church of Santa María, on Plaza de España, which served as the chapter house of the town’s parishes. The church combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. The building belongs to the Church, through the Archdiocese of Valladolid, and the museum is run by Peñafiel town council.
The collection brings together religious art from the town and the wider region: altarpieces, Renaissance and Baroque polychrome sculptures, canvases and goldsmith’s pieces. It has one of the most important collections of goldsmith’s work in Castile and León, with silver processional crosses from the 14th to the 17th centuries.
Among the best-known works are the Retablo de las Ánimas (Altarpiece of the Souls), 16th century and from the school of Felipe Vigarny; the Retablo de la Virgen (Altarpiece of the Virgin), 16th century, by Juan Ortiz el Viejo; an anonymous Romanesque Virgin of the 12th century; and the silver Cruz del Salvador (Cross of the Saviour), 16th century. The original ordinances granted to Peñafiel by the Infante Don Juan Manuel are also preserved.
