About the museum
The museum occupies the former windmill of Las Tricias, built according to the system of the La Palma inventor Isidoro Ortega, who simplified tower mills with a structure of tea wood (madera de tea) on a pivot. It was already working in 1908, and in 1915 it was moved from Calle El Polvillo to the Montaña del Molino, in search of better wind. Three generations of the family of the carpenter Antonio Acosta Rodríguez ground grain there; in 1945 an engine was added, and from 1954 it ran only with the molina (the wind-driven grinding mechanism).
Residents of all of Garafía brought their grain there, and the mill was also a meeting place while people waited for the wind. In 2000 it was bought by the Ayuntamiento de la Villa de Garafía (Villa de Garafía town council), which restored it and opened the Museo de Interpretación del Gofio on 2 April 2016.
The visit shows the structure and original machinery of the mill and explains gofio, a basic food of the Canary Islands, from the cultivation of the cereal to the table, using panels, ethnographic objects and audiovisual and sensory resources. Grinding demonstrations are held, and gofio can be bought. Next to the mill is one of the island's astronomical viewpoints.
