About the museum
The Casa del Maestro is a traditional Canarian house in the old town of Tijarafe, restored by the town council to house an ethnographic museum. The rooms are arranged around a courtyard with its cistern (aljibe), as in the island's traditional houses, and they explain different aspects of life in the municipality in the past.
The museum has five rooms. A traditional kitchen, old looms at the entrance, and rooms devoted to pre-Hispanic pottery, popular dances and musical instruments show the crafts and customs of Tijarafe. The most striking piece is the old frame of the Diablo de Tijarafe, which was used in the town's annual festivities; it is accompanied by cabezudos (large-headed figures) and a permanent exhibition of photographs about this festival.
The building also houses the municipality's tourist information office, which makes it a good starting point for exploring the historic centre.
