About the museum

The Castillo del Moral stands in the historic centre of Lucena and is declared a National Historic Monument. It is a fortress of Almohad origin, built after the arrival of this empire in the area in the mid-12th century, and it played a prominent role on the border with the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. It was the headquarters of the donceles, an elite military corps in the service of Ferdinand the Catholic. Its Torre del Homenaje (keep) served as a prison for King Boabdil after his capture in the battle of 1483. Later it was the residence of the marquises of Comares and, through marriage, of the ducal house of Medinaceli. The name comes from a relief of a mulberry tree (moral) on the octagonal tower.

Lucena town council acquired the castle in 1926, and since December 2001 it has housed the Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Lucena.

Highlights of the museum include the room devoted to the sinkhole of the Cueva del Ángel, an important Lower Palaeolithic site, and the Sala Judía (Jewish Room), which recalls the ancient Jewish city of Eliossana, known as the Pearl of Sepharad. The wall walk (paseo de ronda) and the terrace of the keep offer views over the town centre.
