About the museum
The Calasparra Archaeological Museum, also known as La Encomienda, brings together remains found in the municipal area and its surroundings, from the Palaeolithic to the Islamic culture of the 13th century. It is on Calle Mayor, next to the tourist office, in an 18th-century building that was once the seat of the commandery (encomienda) of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
The collection comprises around 700 objects from archaeology and natural sciences. Its highlights include the Islamic finds from the site of Villa Vieja, an abandoned Andalusi settlement in the municipal area of Calasparra. The natural sciences section displays numerous fossils and minerals.
