About the museum
The Museo del Arroz de Calasparra pays tribute to a crop that defines the identity of the municipality: Calasparra rice was granted its Denominación de Origen (protected designation of origin) in 1986, the first ever awarded to a rice. The museum was officially opened on 1 June 2007 and occupies both floors of the Casa Granero (Granary House) on Calle Mayor.
The building, in neoclassical style, was built in 1808 by the Count of Valle de San Juan. It has served as a home, granary, rice mill and warehouse, and the town council acquired it in 1978. It now shares its space with the tourist office and with other rooms of the Museo de la Villa.
On the first floor are panels on the rice-growing area of the region, the cultivation process and recipes using rice, as well as old photographs of field work and small bags of local varieties; there is also a projection room. On the second floor are preserved 19th-century machinery from the counts' mill, sowing and harvesting tools, ethnographic objects donated by residents, three 18th-century cupboards and copies of historical documents on rice cultivation.
