About the museum
The Museo del Tambor opened on 18 March 2017 on the Plaza de la Iglesia, in premises provided by the town council and run by the Asociación de Tamboristas de Moratalla. It housed photographs, paintings and other works on the history of the drum and its festival, with a drum two metres in diameter as its most eye-catching piece. Today the museum is known as the Museo de la Soledad and is located on calle Soledad.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to the two most representative festivals of Moratalla. The first section covers the Holy Week drums: their history, the craftsmanship with which they are made, the customs and the different drum rolls (redobles) played on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In Moratalla the drummer plays with his face covered, and each drum has its own sound.
The second section deals with the bull runs and the Fiestas Mayores in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Rayo, held from 11 to 17 July. Their core is the traditional encierros por vereda and the release of fighting bulls. Both celebrations have been declared of Regional Tourist Interest, and the drum festival is part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
