Museo Arqueológico Etnológico Gratiniano Baches

Municipal museum with sections on the environment, fossils, archaeology, ethnology and numismatics, in the Casa de Cultura of Pilar de la Horadada.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum opened in 1994 thanks to deposits and donations from private individuals. It brings together finds from local sites and is displayed in five sections: environment, fossils, archaeology, ethnology and numismatics. Part of the permanent exhibition is the study of Gratiniano Baches, the first person to begin archaeological research in Pilar de la Horadada, in the early 20th century.

In the fossil section, the skull of a sirenian stands out, a large aquatic herbivorous mammal that lived in the “Río Seco” during the Pliocene, more than six million years ago. The archaeology section includes Roman pottery, a late Roman milestone and pieces related to the mansio of Thiar, a resting place and trading post at the foot of the Via Augusta. The numismatics section traces coinage from the Iberians to the present day, and the ethnology section shows traditional tools of everyday life and the importance of esparto grass in the municipality.

Since July 2025 the museum has been in the new Casa de Cultura, CAMME (Centro de Artes Museísticas, Musicales y Escénicas), on Calle Cisne, where it occupies the ground floor next to the Museo de Arte Sánchez Lozano and a temporary exhibition room.
