About the museum

The idea of creating an archaeological museum in Rojales arose in the second half of the 1970s, driven by a local group concerned with conserving and publicising the area’s heritage. In 1981 the town council set up the Municipal Archaeological Museum, and in 1982 the Ministry of Culture recognised it. At first it occupied two classrooms in the municipal schools of the San Pedro district.

In the 1990s a Cultural Heritage Service was set up, directed by the archaeologist Manuel de Gea Calatayud, and a new museographic proposal was drawn up for its installation in the former Town Hall of the town. That proposal included a palaeontology section and collection. The Conselleria de Cultura, Educación y Ciencia recognised the museum as permanent on 28 February 1996.

After a major refurbishment of the building, the exhibition space is divided into two large areas. The palaeontology area shows the evolution of the territory over millions of years through the remains of the beings that lived there. The archaeology area offers an overview of the settlement of the Rojales area, from prehistory to the founding of Rojales as a village and municipality. The offer is completed by the town’s ecomuseums.
