About the museum
The museum opened in 1999 and is registered in the Andalusian Register of Museums and Museum Collections. It is named after the archaeologist Manuel Sotomayor Muro, who made known the site of Los Villares de Andújar. Its seat is the Palacio de los Niños de Don Gome, a manor house from the late 16th and early 17th centuries built for the Cárdenas-Valdivia lineage. It has a Baroque tower-portal in sandstone, added in the second third of the 17th century, and a porticoed courtyard with round arches on Tuscan columns. The building is a Bien de Interés Cultural (asset of cultural interest). The town council bought it and began its rehabilitation in 1995. It also houses the Casa del Alfarero (potter's house).
The collections present the archaeology and history of Andújar, with pieces from the Iberian, Roman and Visigothic cultures, among others. A key part is the pottery of the Roman city of Isturgi and the continuity of pottery-making in the area for some two thousand years. The museum also displays fossil remains and contemporary works.
