About the museum
O Pozo do Cachón is a tide mill built at the beginning of the 19th century beside the mouth of the Valdexeira river, in the Anido cove (parish of Serres, Muros). It is also known as the Muíño de Bazarra after its builder, and is considered one of the largest tide mills in Galicia. A dam of more than 230 metres held back the estuary water at high tide. When the tide fell, that water turned the grinding stones. At full capacity it could grind more than 200 kilos of maize per hour.
The building has two floors: on the lower one the water is collected, and on the upper one is the machinery. At the beginning of the 20th century the storage area was turned into a seaweed and seawater bathhouse for therapeutic purposes, known as the Baños de Santa Rita. After years of neglect and damage from a flood in 1994, Muros Town Council restored it between 1990 and 1999.
Today the mill operates as an interpretation centre on the mills of the Costa da Morte, with a model that reproduces the exterior and interior of the building when it was in operation. The annexed building hosts temporary exhibitions and archaeological pieces from Muros. At high tide the whole complex seems to float on the water.
