About the museum

The church of San Salvador de los Caballeros is a Romanesque-Mudéjar church. According to tradition, a Templar monastery stood on this site in the mid-12th century, and two 17th-century stone slabs preserve Templar crosses and crossbars. The present building was erected at the beginning of the 13th century. Its interior walls were painted, which earned it already in the 14th century the nickname “el pintado” (“the painted one”).

In the 16th century the transverse arch (arco toral) of the central nave was replaced and, between 1676 and 1684, semicircular arches were installed, which still survive. The church ceased to be a parish in 1896 and fell into ruin through neglect, until it was declared a National Monument in 1929.

Today it houses a sacred art museum devoted mainly to the sculpture of medieval Toro, with pieces partly recovered during restorations of other churches in the city. It includes the holdings of the Fundación González Allende, which helped restore some of the carvings and the church’s wall paintings. Some images were altered at the time to dress them in the fashion of the period.
