Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The museum was planned in 1959 in Quesada (Jaén), the birthplace of the painter Rafael Zabaleta Fuentes (1907-1960), and opened in 1963 as a picture gallery focused on the artist's work. The works came from the painter's heirs, who gave them voluntarily to the town.

After a refurbishment in 1992, the institution moved to its current premises, a new building inaugurated on 1 December 2008 next to the Paseo de Los Tres Caños. In addition to the painter's collection, the centre has a library, a shop, restoration workshops and a room for temporary exhibitions.

Works by other artists who have donated them to the museum have been added to the Zabaleta holdings, among them Miró, Percebal and Tàpies. Since 1970 an international painting and sculpture competition has been held in Quesada, and the prize-winning works become part of the collection.
