About the museum

The Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló brings together the collections previously held by several local bodies: the Museo Provincial de Castellón, the art collection of the Diputación Provincial and various deposits, including works from the Museo del Prado. To these are added donations from collectors and artists from the province and the bequest of Francisco Esteve Gálvez. More recently it also acquired several oil paintings from Zurbarán's workshop, on loan from the Real Convento de Monjas Capuchinas de Castelló.

The current building opened in January 2001. It was designed by the architects Tuñón and Mansilla and received several architecture awards, including the first prize of the COACV 1999–2000 and the FAD Architecture Prize 2001; it was also a finalist for the Mies van der Rohe Award. It houses the permanent collection, rooms for temporary exhibitions, a library, an auditorium, restoration workshops and research archives on archaeology and prehistory.

The collection is organised into four sections. The fine arts section occupies the second and third floors and covers the 14th century to the first third of the 20th century. The archaeology section traces around 200,000 years of the territory's history, from the Palaeolithic to the Islamic world. The ethnology section displays tools and scenographic setups of Castellón's popular culture. The ceramics section, the most important in the museum, has more than eight hundred pieces on show.
