About the museum
The Museo de Historia Militar de Castellón occupies the former barracks of the Tetuán No. 14 Infantry Regiment, which used it until the summer of 1995. The two-storey building, with a small tower used as a store, was bought by the Castelló de la Plana town council, renovated and handed over to the “Bermúdez de Castro” Military Classroom (Aula Militar), an association of civilians and military personnel to which the museum belongs. It is not dependent on the Ministry of Defence.
It opened on 11 March 2003 and covers the military-historical events that took place in the province of Castellón, as well as distant events in which people from Castellón played a prominent role. The holdings come mainly from donations by private individuals, together with some acquisitions and deposits from institutions. Around a thousand pieces are on display, and another 4,500 are kept in storage. Large objects are gradually being placed in the outdoor area.
The route covers, among other topics, the defence of the Castellón coast between the 16th and 19th centuries, the War of Independence, the Carlist Wars, the Civil War, the participation of people from Castellón in the wars in Africa, Cuba, the Philippines and Morocco, and compulsory military service. There are also collections of small Roman bronzes, buttons, insignia, decorations, grenades and mines.
