About the museum
The museum occupies an 18th-century stately house in Castelló, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). From 1931 the Sociedad Castellonense de Cultura was based in the Casa Matutano, and on 21 December 1932 representatives of several Valencian cultural bodies met there to approve the bases for unifying Valencian spelling, known as the Normes de Castelló or Normes del 32.
The house holds what is probably the most important collection on the crafts and way of life of the city in the 19th and 20th centuries: more than 2,000 pieces, including utensils and tools. The route is self-guided, with explanatory panels in Spanish (castellano) and Valencian.
The museum is part of the Museu de la Ciutat de Castelló (MUCC), created in 2018 to integrate, research, conserve and disseminate the city's heritage. The MUCC is spread over several venues, among them the Castell Vell, the Museu de la Mar, El Fadrí, the Roman villa of Vinamargo and the air-raid shelter.
