About the museum

The Museo de los Corporales occupies rooms of the Basilica of Santa María de los Sagrados Corporales in Daroca (Zaragoza): the former main sacristy and the chapter house, built at the beginning of the 17th century on the initiative of the Archbishop of Zaragoza, Martín Terrer de Valenzuela. The first museum opened in 1939 with goods from the church itself and from parishes of the town that no longer exist.

The current museum, with extensions into two other rooms that had served as a sacristy and storeroom, was fitted out in the early 2000s and opened in 2003. It now has four spaces: goldsmith work, with silver pieces from the 13th century to the present day, many made by workshops in Daroca; Aragonese Gothic, in the former chapter house, with valuable panels such as a Calvary attributed to Bartolomé Bermejo; the altarpiece room, with three altarpieces from parishes that no longer exist; and a textile room on the upper floor, with one of the most complete collections of liturgical vestments in Aragon.

Highlights include the 13th-century arqueta (casket) and the Custodia de los Corporales (1384), the Corpus Christi canopy (palio), the hangings (reposteros) attributed to the Catholic Monarchs, the cape of San Miguel from the mid-15th century and the so-called Libro Bermejo, from the 14th century. The relics of the Sagrados Corporales are linked to a eucharistic miracle of 1239.
