About the museum
The Museo de la Historia y de las Artes, also called the Museo Municipal, occupies the former hospital of Santo Domingo in Daroca (Zaragoza), a building documented since the 14th century beside the church of Santo Domingo. In the mid-15th century two twin windows with plaster arches were opened in its façade, and in the 16th century a gallery of brick arches was added on the upper floor. In the 19th century the building was used as a bread bakery.
In 1984 the town council, with support from the Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza, the Government of Aragon and the central administration, restored the building, which was in ruins, to house a municipal museum. It opened on 28 May 1986 and was renovated in 2011.
The exhibition is spread over several floors. On the first floor are art pieces from the 15th to the 19th centuries, mainly from the church of Santa María, including Gothic panel paintings from the workshops of Juan Bonilla and Bartolomé Bermejo, a 13th-century carving of the Virgen Goda and an image of San Onofre. On the second floor more than 400 archaeological pieces are displayed, with materials from prehistory, from the Celtiberian site of La Umbría and from Roman, Muslim and medieval Christian Daroca.
