About the museum
The museum is devoted to the Semana Santa Marinera, the Holy Week celebration of the seaside neighbourhoods of València (Cabanyal, Canyamelar and Grau). It is named after Salvador Caurín, for many years mentor and president of the Junta Mayor of the festival. It is housed in a former rice mill in Cabanyal, on a street with a seafaring atmosphere.
The collection brings together religious art from the brotherhoods, guilds and cofradías of the seaside neighbourhoods: images and sculptures by artists such as Mariano Benlliure, Bernardo Morales, Carlos Román, Vicente Salvador and Inocencio Cuesta, as well as banners, processional staffs, publications and processional objects, each with an information card. A panel explains how the festival has evolved over the years.
The collection of costumes of Biblical characters stands out; it recalls the open-air performances of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. The same elements that can be seen in the museum go out onto the streets in the Holy Week processions. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, lectures, Holy Week concerts and competitions for bugle and drum bands.
