About the museum
The Museu de les Ciències is the science outreach centre of the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in Valencia. It opened on 13 November 2000 in a building designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, with organic forms and monumental proportions: about 220 metres long, 80 metres wide and 55 metres high, with more than 42,000 square metres built, of which 26,000 are exhibition space.
The museum was conceived as a benchmark for interactive science. Its approach is to arouse curiosity and critical thinking through exhibitions in which visitors can touch, experiment and take part, without giving up scientific rigour. Alongside the exhibitions there is a programme of science entertainment with workshops, demonstrations and live shows, such as those presented in the Teatro de la Ciencia.
The building is surrounded by water and, together with the Hemisfèric, the Oceanogràfic, the Umbracle, the Àgora and the Palau de les Arts, forms part of the complex built in the former bed of the River Turia. Besides its own exhibitions, the museum hosts scientific congresses and collaborates with science museums around the world.
