About the museum

The Museo del Arroz de Valencia is in the seafaring district of El Cabanyal, less than a kilometre from the Las Arenas beach. It occupies a traditional rice mill from 1906 that went on hulling and polishing rice until the seventies of the 20th century. In 2003 the Ayuntamiento de Valencia (city council) decided to renovate the building and turn it into a museum to preserve the collective memory of a crop that is part of the city's identity.

The renovation of the building was promoted by the City Council, and the original machinery was restored by the Universidad Politécnica de València. The route shows how rice was processed in the early 20th century, from the arrival of the grain to its final preparation. The building has a ground floor with a mezzanine and three further floors, connected by stairs and a lift.

The museum depends on the Department of Culture of the Ayuntamiento de Valencia and, besides free visits, offers free educational programmes for primary and secondary schools.
