About the museum
The Museo de Prehistoria e Arqueoloxía de Vilalba is a municipal public foundation that researches, collects, conserves and disseminates the prehistory and ancient history of Galicia. It was founded and directed by the physician and archaeologist José María Ramil Soneira; after his death in 2014 his son, Eduardo Ramil Rego, took over as director. Since the summer of 2002 it has occupied its current home on Calle Doutor Domingo Goás.
Its holdings come from private sites and from excavations promoted by the museum itself and by other bodies. The permanent exhibition traces the cultures that inhabited the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period. It includes one of the most complete collections in Galicia of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic materials, as well as pieces from the Neolithic, the Bronze Age and the Castro culture (cultura castrexa).
Among its pieces are the remains of the earliest known human occupation in Galicia and a pendant from the site of Férvedes II in Xermade, considered the first art object found in the country. The museum also publishes the scientific journal Férvedes and organises travelling exhibitions, courses, seminars and lectures.
