About the museum
The Museo del Agua de Sobrón opened on 15 August 2008 and also functions as an interpretation centre for the Añana comarca. It was created to invite reflection on water as an essential element of life on the planet, and it is a pioneering project in the Basque Country because of its theme and the museographic techniques it uses.
Sobrón, on the banks of the River Ebro, enjoyed a period of splendour between the 19th century and the mid-20th century thanks to the mineral-medicinal waters of its former spa, known as the “Vichy español” (Spanish Vichy). The museum preserves that memory linked to water and connects it with environmental education and responsible consumption.
It is conceived as an interactive space for the general public, where simulations allow visitors to learn and have fun at the same time. The route, which is only possible with a guided tour, passes through five thematic areas: Agua viva (living water), La ciencia del agua (the science of water), Agua que cura (water that heals), Agua y medioambiente (water and the environment) and Agua que piensa (water that thinks). The last of these includes a giant human head inside which images and messages are projected.
