About the museum

The Centro de Interpretación del Agua aims to help visitors understand the role of water in Loja, a town known as “Loja, ciudad del agua” (Loja, city of water). Through graphic and audiovisual material it traces the relationship between the population and this resource from prehistory, with examples such as the Fuente de los 25 Caños (Fountain of the 25 Spouts), the Fuente Santa (Holy Spring), the Infiernos de Loja, the source of the Riofrío and the El Frontil spring.

The square building, which resembles a large ice cube, stands beside the River Genil, in the Plaza del Donante. It is framed by two chimneys that survive from the former olive-oil mill of the San Isidro Cooperative. It has two floors with several rooms.

On the ground floor are the Sala de la Inmersión (Immersion Room), with a large interactive panel on the three states of water, a patio recreating a Mediterranean forest, and the Sala de las Historias (Room of Stories), a glass maze about the history of Loja and water. On the first floor are the Sala del Entorno (Environment Room), with a route shaped like a river channel, a laboratory and study room for experiments, and an audiovisual room.
