About the museum
The Museo Etnológico de Salar, also known as Casa Museo Etnológico, occupies an old house with centuries of history in the middle of the town centre. The collection was assembled over the years by a local woman, who bought the house and gathered objects from relatives and friends; the space was opened to the public relatively recently.
The rooms are arranged to reflect the needs of a simple and hard-working way of life, with the hearth as the centre of the house, where food was cooked, the family warmed themselves in winter and stories were told. Cupboards hold large pots used for pig slaughter (ollas matanceras), spit racks (espeteras) and other kitchen utensils, as well as tools and gear for work in the fields.
Among the objects are many made of esparto grass, such as panniers (serones), baskets (capachos), esparto baskets (espuertas), small baskets (cestillos) and mats (esteras). The town council's tourist leaflet presents the museum as a record of the recent history of life in Salar and as a journey back in time for visitors.
