About the museum
Esparto is one of the most enduring hallmarks of Cieza’s identity, present since prehistory for its many agricultural and domestic uses. The museum arose from a popular initiative coordinated by the Club Atalaya-Ateneo de la Villa de Cieza, with objects donated by residents and the collaboration of the town council.
It offers a basic tour of the processes of esparto craft: harvesting the grass from the hillside, drying it on racks, boiling it in pools (balsas), chopping it with mallets, combing it, spinning it on wheels and making cords, braids and scourers (estropajos). The tools and implements used for each task are shown, together with manufactured esparto products and printed and photographic documentation. The museum also has a small library and a shop.
