About the museum
The Museo del Granito de Quintana de la Serena explains the role this stone has played in the life of the town. The extraction and working of the granite, commercially known as Gris Quintana, have for generations been the main occupation of its residents and have shaped its architecture, streets and parks.
The museum occupies the ground floor of the town's former inn, a manor house of the La Serena region built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with a portal and much of its façade in granite. The town council bought the building in 1992, restored it and inaugurated it as a municipal cultural centre in 1999; the museum opened on 10 June 2002. On the upper floor is the interpretation centre for the Roman site of Hijovejo.
The route is self-guided, with explanatory panels, tools and photographs on the extraction, transformation and marketing of the granite. It includes a recreated forge with sound, the stonemason's workshop, a display of granites and finishes, and an exhibition of tools. A later renovation added audiovisual resources and models.
