About the museum

The museum occupies a former water mill on the banks of the Almadán river, built as a flour mill with two mills and two pairs of millstones and later converted into an olive oil mill to grind olives and extract oil. The complex includes a large courtyard with granaries for storing olives before pressing, and the mill building, which has several rooms.

All the original machinery survives inside and can be run to grind olives: the millstone, the kneading trough and the hydraulic press. Visitors can thus see how oil was made in earlier times.

On the upper floor is the Museo del Aguardiente, an interpretation space on the importance of aguardiente production in Ojén between the 19th and 20th centuries and on the prestige achieved by the spirit made by Pedro Morales, whose secret recipe was never revealed. Ojén's aguardiente became famous in America and in the wealthiest houses of Europe, and it is mentioned in works by Camilo José Cela, Rosalía de Castro and even Pablo Picasso. It is no longer produced, but the raisins in aguardiente are still very well known.
