About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Zalduondo, also called Kulturgune, occupies the Lazarraga-Amézaga palace, a 16th-century Renaissance building beside the village church. Its plateresque façade displays a large heraldic coat of arms flanked by two sculptures, and outside there is a monument honouring Blas Arratibel, a local resident who contributed to popular culture.
It is a museum of regional character that illustrates, over several centuries, the history, ethnology, folklore and art of the area through collections of religious objects, paintings, pottery and wood carvings. The palace itself is a highlight: it preserves 16th-century mural paintings of about 100 m², attributed to Diego de Cegama, which form a unique narrative ensemble in a civil building of its period in the Basque Country.
Its spaces include a copy of the Lazarraga manuscript, the first known secular text written in Basque, Alavese popular pottery and a room dedicated to the rural carnivals of Álava, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Basque Government in 2015, with the costumes of their main characters.
