About the museum

The MITA opened in December 1997 and presents itself as Spain's only international puppet museum and the first centre dedicated to the art of the puppet to open in the country. Its aim is to preserve, study and promote the art of the puppet.

It is housed in the Palacio de los Milà i Aragó, a 15th-century architectural complex of more than 1,100 m². The collection brings together puppets and marionettes from every continent, each representative of its country of origin. On the first floor an audiovisual presentation explains animation techniques, and one room displays the oldest puppets, from Europe, Africa and Asia, with a notable series from the island of Java made up of wayang golek and wayang kulit puppets.

The second floor has three spaces: marionettes from travelling companies between 1930 and 1950, with the Tirisiti from Alcoy; groups of marionettes from theatre shows; and, since 2007, the room of puppets from cinema and television, with characters such as Babalà, the Feretes, the Electroduendes from “La bola de cristal” and the automatons by Francisco Sanz. Since 2022 there is also a space with the figures by Alejandro Milán, including Horacio Pinchadiscos. The museum runs guided tours, shows, workshops and storytelling sessions, and has a documentation centre.
