Museo Memoria del Agua

Museum in the former food market of Níjar on the traditional water culture of an arid area, with information panels and a documentation centre.

Opening hours

About the museum

The Museo Memoria del Agua occupies the former food market (mercado de abastos) of the town of Níjar, built in 1950, in the heart of the historic centre. It is devoted to documenting the traditional water culture of arid areas, a distinctive feature of the municipality. The Oficina Municipal de Turismo (municipal tourist office) is in the same building.

The exhibition is organised in the open-plan ground floor of the market. Through information panels it covers the history of water in the region: the first settlers, the Mediterranean colonisers, the alum workings of Rodalquilar, the Hispano-Muslim period, livestock farming and dryland farming, the Isabel II reservoir, the colonisation by IRYDA (the Agrarian Reform and Development Institute) and desalination.

Visitors learn why water is essential for life, how its cycle works, what role it plays in the climate and which conditions explain the aridity of the south-east of the peninsula, as well as the solutions people have used over time to capture, store and distribute it. In the mezzanine there is a documentation centre on hydraulic topics, with publications and a digital consultation point.
