About the museum
La Casa del Níscalo is an interpretation centre dedicated to the study and promotion of fungi, mushrooms and truffles, both edible and poisonous. It is in Molinicos, in the Sierra del Segura (Albacete), an area with a long tradition of mushroom gathering in which the níscalo (Lactarius deliciosus, also called guíscano or robellón) is the most prized species. It is the only museum on mycology in Castilla–La Mancha.
The permanent exhibition is interactive and educational. Through panels, photographs, display cases and games, it explains the diversity of shapes and colours of fungi, their importance for forests and agriculture, their uses in medicine, and the techniques of identification, collection, preservation and cultivation.
Since 2006, the Jornadas Micológicas (mycology days) have been held on the second weekend of November, with outings to gather and sort mushrooms, tasting meals and talks by the botanist and mycologist José Fajardo.
