About the museum

The museum is an initiative of Joaquín Hernández, director of the company Tragaluz Títeres and of the Taller del Sol, who began gathering puppets, books and related objects in the 1980s, when he came into contact with puppet theatre. It opened in 2012 on a rural estate in Llugarín, about two kilometres from the centre of La Pola Siero, in a building made with ecological materials, designed with energy-efficiency criteria and with space for future extensions.

The collection brings together puppets and objects from the five continents: string, shadow, glove and rod puppets, some recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as toy and paper theatres, automata, posters, postcards, stamps and books. There are giant pieces and tiny ones.

The visit is guided and by reservation, and includes a tour of the exhibition and of the craft workshop, where it is explained how puppets are made, with what materials and how they are handled. Visitors can move some of them. The museum also offers themed animated visits, such as those on shadow puppets or “el ZOO del museo”.
